This was a city that loved its live music, and gigs could be found happening everywhere. King Street Newcastle became home to several Great Southern Nights' gigs, including performances by some of Australia’s biggest artists like King Stingray, Full Flower Moon Band, The Belair Lip Bombs, and electronic music duo Slumberjack. Audiences also caught the infectious sounds of Running Touch and funk/hip hop band Winston Surfshirt at this much-loved local hotspot.
Fans got up close to Boo Seeka’s smooth synths and rolling beats in the intimate setting of Ravella on Watt Street. Meanwhile, legendary Aussie band The Cruel Sea and New Zealand quintet SIX60 lit up Bar On The Hill, rocking students and visitors with a mix of classics and fresh tunes.
For those who fancied a short trip out of the big smoke, Xavier Rudd played a soulful set in a secluded bushland venue, Dashville—an unforgettable experience in nature’s own amphitheatre.
On the final weekend, the city’s oldest surviving theatre, The Civic, opened its doors to welcome the beautiful, haunting sounds of Sarah Blasko.
Newcastle’s music scene proved itself as deeply supportive of emerging artists, with a tight-knit creative community that nurtured homegrown talent while also welcoming big names from across the country. It was the perfect weekend to soak up a strong lineup of Australian talent and feel the pulse of live music at every turn.
